Potential energy

A book on the top shelf of a locker possesses mechanical energy due to its vertical position above the ground (gravitational potential energy).

     B.     Potential energy

This is the stored energy of position possessed by an object.

Mathematically the potential  energy of an object  is:

Where, m represents the mass of object (Kg), h represents the height of the object (metres), g represents the acceleration of gravity (9.8 m/s2 on Earth) and PEGR represents the potential energy (Joule, J).

Where, ME represents the mechanical energy, KE represents the kinetic energy and PE represents the potential energy.
